If you are new to the concept of running a consignment store, and perhaps early in the process of considering starting a store of you own up, it would be a good idea to decide what you will sell!
Even though practically anything can be sold at a consignment store, you need to make sure that what you take and what you sell fits the kind of business you want to be. Common consignment items are:
- Clothes: Consignment is particularly suited to clothes sales, as often clothes are discarded at a point where they have little or no signs of wear. There are also plenty of items that are readily available, so you should never be in short supply.
- Furniture: Often disposed of when a house-move takes place, some attractive items can often be available for consignment. Do watch out for issues around storage, however, as items often are heavy and take a lot of space.
- Household Items: Some families buy new household items regularly, meaning that fresh inventory is often available after a spring clean. There is a great opportunity here to form a collection for sale.
Each of the above has different strengths and weaknesses and these are only heightened by your own store’s aesthetic. If you’re a children’s consignment store, a lawnmower will probably look out of place! Just because someone brought it to consign doesn’t mean you should take it. Keep in mind the look of your store, your market, and how fast you can sell an item.
